VMIS is a Multiple Document Interface, or MDI, application. This means that there is a main window with an open workspace, or client area, in which multiple screens, or child windows, can be viewed, organized, and used within a single instance of VMIS. The main window has a menu bar across the top that provides access to the different areas and features in VMIS. This menu bar is dynamic in that the menus available in the menu bar will differ based on the rights assigned to a user.

• File Menu: Contains tools applicable to all users as well as Hospital and clinician reports
• Patient Info Menu: Contains tools for viewing and managing patients
• Client Services Menu: Contains tools for viewing and managing client accounts, admissions, and appointments
• Laboratories Menu: Contains tools applicable to the various diagnostic labs
• Surgery Menu: Contains tools applicable to surgery and anesthesia services
• Medical Records Menu: Contains tools applicable to the Medical Records offices
• Pharmacy Menu: Contains tools and reports applicable to the Pharmacy and pharmacy inventory
• Administration Menu: Contains tools and reports applicable to the Hospital's Administration office
• Business Office Menu: Contains tools and reports applicable to the Hospital's Business office
• Human Resources Menu: Contains tools and reports applicable to the Hospital's Human Resources office
• Accounting Menu: Contains reports applicable to the Hospital's accounting and financial operations
• System Mgmt Menu: Contains tools for the VMIS Development team
• Phone Menu: Opens the VMIS Phone Directory
• Documents Menu: Opens the VMIS Documents Explorer
• Windows Menu: Shows a list of currently open child windows
• Help Menu: Contains support information for VMIS, including the VMIS Work Request tool
